The Spartan boys swim team turned some heads at the University of Utah Natatorium with a remarkable third place finish in what appears to be the most competitive region of 5A: Skyline 462, Olympus 374, Murray 281, West 260, Highland 248, East 185.
Soren Selph (Sr.) put on another crashing display of speed while racing a deep Skyline team in the freestyle sprints. He claimed the fifth-place medal in the 50 free with a time of 23.30. Then he followed up with 51 seconds flat in the hotly-contested 100 free. Not only was this a PR, but a second-place finish. Soren earned the highest finish in an individual event for the Spartan swim team.
Cooper Greene (Sr.) clenched the fourth-place medal in the 200 IM. He clocked a PR of 2:08.67, slashing his butterfly by close to a second and closing out with an impressive freestyle. Then he swam a season-best time of 58.58 in the 100 back propelling him into the medals with a sixth-place finish.
Cameron Wright (Jr.) set a notable breaststroke PR with a demonstration of steady pacing. He dropped one second in the first 50 yards followed by another second in the final 50. A time of 1:05.37 earned him the fifth-place medal.
Eric Thackeray (Jr.) set personal records in every freestyle distance this week. He saved the best for the Region Championships by demolishing his former PR in the 200 free by nearly 5 seconds. With a time of 1:54.91 including a strong push in the final 50 yards, Eric swam to the fifth-place medal.
Holden Cheney (So.) smashed his former PR in the 100 fly by 2.3 seconds. From an outside lane, he chased down a coveted third-place finish with a time of 56.14.
The boys 200 free relay team surprised the field, roaring to second place behind Skyline. Soren Selph led the charge with 23.47. The subsequent legs were swam by Holden Cheney (23.84), Cameron Wright (23.75), and Cooper Greene (23.47) all of whom bested or nearly matched their PRs. The combination of these peak performances resulted in a season-best relay of 1:34.53, an improvement of 1.8 seconds for the Spartan boys.
The boys 400 free relay team outraced West, Highland, and East for the third-place medal. Soren Selph (51.45) and Cooper Greene (51.98) again powered the lead-off and anchor legs with Lincoln Yospe (53.52) and Eric Thackeray (52.96) swimming the middle legs. In a raucous finish, the Murray boys accomplished another season-best relay by dropping 3.2 seconds for a time of 3:29.91.
For the Spartan girls team, Morgan Underwood (Sr.) was stellar in the 100 breast winning the fourth-place medal. She started fast and finished with a new PR of 1:13.03, nearly a 1-second improvement.
