On a warm spring afternoon, the Murray HS Boys soccer teams traveled south to take on the 6A American Fork Cavemen. The backline of Devon Gannon, Taylor Moyes, Kevin Tegura, and Tristan White, along with sophomore goalkeeper Jaxon Waldram and the rest of the Murray Team, were tested by a physical and aggressive American Fork Squad. They proved up to the task in keeping a shutout as the two halves of play concluded and the game headed to overtime. The first overtime session remained a scoreless stalemate. It wasn’t until about a minute left in the second overtime that Nick Olsen broke through the American Fork defense and got a contested shot off which hit the inside corner of the post and rebounded out and across the front of the goal where it was gathered and sent into the back of the net by an onrushing TJ Bengtzen for the Golden Goal and a 1-0 Spartan victory. In the JV game, American Fork scored with only seconds left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead to the break. The Spartans made some halftime adjustments and came out with great energy and had better possession early in the half. They soon were able to get a goal to draw even by Josh Schoeneman. Not long after, Harold Bohorquez made a great pass to Will Riches who calmly gave Murray the lead. The pressure applied by the Spartans continued to increase and Harold then had a nice scoring shot, followed by Riley Murray closing the scoring to make it a 4-1 final and a pleasant bus ride home. Season action continues this Friday as Murray again takes to the road to duel with the Cyprus Pirates.
