Nearly 330 athletes from across 5A and 6A converged at the annual Wasatch Winter Invitational. The Spartans battled to an outstanding second-place finish among nine teams. Over 60% of Murray swimmers set a personal record, and 75% achieved a season-best time. Boys and girls combined for a final score of Wasatch 995, Murray 614, Box Elder 556, Viewmont 468, Mountain Ridge 318, Provo 269, Mountain View 254, Orem 247, & Hunter 247.
Holden Cheney (Sr.) was top scorer for the boys team with 46 points. He won the 100 fly with a season-best time of 55.35 seconds, bolting from a three-way dog fight over the last 10 meters. Cheney picked up a pair of season-bests racing to seventh in the 100 back.
Uso Tagoa’i (Sr.) was top scorer for the girls team with 51 points including second-place finishes in both the 200 IM and 100 back. Clocking 2:20.05, she cut a full two seconds in the 200 IM to set her third straight PR.
Lincoln Yospe (Sr.) scored 45 points taking third in the 200 free and fourth in the 100 free. He got primed in the 100 free with a season-best time, and then set a PR at the same distance as the lead-off leg in the 400 free relay. 52.18 breaks a mark set by Yospe at the 2019 state meet.
Alejandra Uvario (Sr.) scored 36 points while grabbing a top three finish in the 100 free. She swam an aggressive first split and held off a Wasatch pursuer by 0.11 seconds. Her new PR of 1:00.52 is a cut of 0.44 seconds.
Two relay teams for the girls also clinched a top three finish:
2nd in 200 medley relay – Uso Tagoa’i, Izzy Wright, Kalie Lam, Tylee Peak
3rd in 200 free relay – Uso Tagoa’i, Kalie Lam, Alejandra Uvario, Tylee Peak
For the boys team, additional points or personal/season records were earned by Gavin Holmberg (38.5, SR), Devin Jessop (35, PR), Ethan Leonard (32), Tyler Jacobsen (20.5, PR), Michael Correa (12, PR), Joey Horne (8, PR), Micah Black (4, PR), Teagan Drury (3), Will Taylor (3, PR), Robert Jorgensen (PR), Case Elliott (PR), Skylar Galt (PR), Brandon George (PR), Liam Morris (PR), William Steinbach (PR), and John Horne (PR).
